Who we are

St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Chaplaincy serves the parish community of Abakaliki and the men and women held at the Medium Security Custodial Centre beside us.

Our patron was a Franciscan priest who volunteered to die in place of a stranger at Auschwitz. A Chaplaincy that carries his name cannot be inward-looking, and ours is not: the prison apostolate is not a side project here, it is the reason we are where we are.

Questions we are often asked

If yours is not here, please write to us.

I am new to Abakaliki. How do I register?

Come to any Mass and speak to one of the executives afterwards, or send us a message through this website. We will take your details and put you in touch with the group that suits you.

How do I arrange a baptism?

Write to us with the child’s name and your own, and the parish office will arrange the preparation and a date.

Can I have a Mass offered for someone?

Yes. Send the name and the intention, and the office will confirm the date with you.

Can I join the Correctional Centre visits?

The apostolate goes quarterly and welcomes volunteers. Please write first, as visits are arranged with the Service in advance.

The next visit needs supplies

Whatever you can give goes into the boxes that go through the gates.
